Studying in Hamburg

Hamburg is as close to ideal for business students as it gets. As Germany’s second-largest city, we’re home to nearly 2 million people – meaning the opportunities are nearly endless. From the industrial port – one of Europe’s most important – to the thousands of international companies with offices here, you’ll live, study and work alongside people from all over the world. At the same time, Hamburg has a very German feel, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice German and get to know German employers.

Living in Hamburg

Hamburg is a cosmopolitan city with a long international history. Across the city’s many neighborhoods, you’ll find culture, nightlife, restaurants and bars, nature, athletic activities – whatever you’re looking for, and more.

Get to know Hamburg:

You can find out if you need a visa to enter Germany by checking out the Staatenliste zur Visumpflicht (list of countries for which a visa is required) issued by the Foreign Office.

Please apply for your visa in a timely manner with the responsible German representatives, as it may take up to two or three months to process your application. Universität Hamburg strongly urges applicants to apply for a student applicant visa immediately following the application deadline by submitting confirmation that their application for admission to university has been received. This ensures that you can enter Germany in time to commence studies if you are accepted to a program.

Important: Please note that a three-month Schengen Visa ("tourist visa") cannot be extended for the purposes of university study or research in Germany.

As University of Hamburg is a public German university, there are no tuition fees for MIBAS. However, there are still costs associated with your studies.

Semester contribution

All students pay a so-called “semester contribution” each semester to cover administrative costs. This includes a “Deutschlandsemesterticket”, which allows you to travel on all public and regional transportation in Germany for free during the semester.

Currently, the semester contribution (paid once a semester, i.e. twice yearly) is €332.

Cost of living

Very broadly, a student budget in Hamburg could range from €1,000-€1,600 or more per month, including housing, food, health insurance, and other living expenses. Like all big cities, Hamburg can be expensive, but lower-cost options – especially for students – can be found in most areas.

Scholarships

As there are no tuition fees at UHH, the scholarship offering is limited. The UHH Department of International Affairs and Studierendenwerk can offer guidance.

Working alongside your studies

As an international student, you can work alongside your studies within certain limits.

The UHH Career Center offers support and guidance for career planning.

Studierendenwerk can also offer information and guidance on finding a job and relevant regulations for international students.

A university is not just about studying. Studying is also about meeting people, having fun together, developing further. There are also a wide variety of groups in which you can get involved and make a positive difference. And the campus is the place where all this happens.

Life on campus has its own rhythm, which is shaped by the lectures and seminars. But there is always time for visits to the cafeteria or cafés. And musical interests are not neglected either: orchestra and choir, theater groups and over 100 sports are open to all students.

The campus of the University of Hamburg is colorful and lively, full of people with different views, cultural backgrounds and interests. It's worth getting involved.

Have fun on the campus of the University of Hamburg!
